Weekly Update #3
Math 7A and 7B
On Friday students will be writing their Integers Exam. This unit exam will cover all concepts from chapter 2 on integers. Students have been given many opportunities this week
Next week we will begin our Unit 3: Operations with Decimals. One thing that may be different in math for Grade 7 is that students will not be using calculators in class until after February. Our next unit is heavily focused on building numeracy skills. Numeracy is the ability to perform mathematical operations (adding, subtracting, dividing, multiplying, converting fractions/percents, decimals, etc.) without the use of technology (calculator). If students are experiencing any difficulties during the next unit they are encouraged to come in for extra help during lunch time or signing up for a numeracy flex block (flex blocks are every day 3).
I mentioned in last week's update that you will now notice an overall percentage grade on PowerSchool. Again, be aware that it is still very early on in the year and a student's grade may fluctuate greatly from assessment to assessment until we start to get a few assessments done. As well, in Grade 7 Math we cover a lot of different topics and units. The curriculum is quite vast and sometimes students will excel on a certain unit but struggle on another.
I would also like remind you again of my blog (https://welzblogeljhs.blogspot.com/). The blog contains a short update of each class and links to notes, assignments, and answer keys.
If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me via email or phone (7809862184 - ext 235).
Math 8C
On Friday students will be writing their Integers Exam. This unit exam will cover all concepts from chapter 2 on integers. Students have been given many opportunities this week. One thing that is new to math in grade 8 is that students will be writing a numeracy portion during every unit exam. During these numeracy portions students will not be allowed to use their calculators. These numeracy questions are aligned with the new numeracy section of the PAT exam in grade 9.
Next week we are beginning Unit 3: Fractions.

Weekly Update #1
Math 7A and 7B
We are currently working on Unit 2: Integers. So far this year students have learned how to add positive and negative integers.
Students completed a small assignment that was due today. Most students completed the assignment in the one period that was given - students that did not finish are required to complete on their own time. Typically assignments, quizzes, and exams will be marked and reported on PowerSchool within 5 school days and I try my best to have it graded as soon as possible. If a student did not hand the assignment in you will see a missing and late icon for that assignment. It is important that students ensure that they hand in assessments in a timely manner. It is important in Junior High that students start to take ownership of their own learning. If students do not take the opportunity to complete an assessment, they may receive a zero. As well, students may only work to complete tasks in the current reporting period. Therefore, once report cards are issued, marks are locked and zeros will be reluctantly awarded (if you see a grade of zero on PowerSchool students are still allowed to complete this assessment as long as it falls in the same reporting period).
Reporting Periods:
Term One: Sept 4 - Dec 2
Term Two: Dec 3 - March 31
Term Three: April 1 - June 2
There will be a quiz next week on Tuesday September 18th that covers adding integers and a few questions on subtracting integers using algebra tiles.
If students are ever experiencing difficulties with any course material I am available for extra math help during lunch in Room 4.

Welcome to the 2018-2019 School Year!
Dear Parents/Guardians
Welcome to the 2018-2019 School Year!
In this blog you will find a short summary of what students do in each class. This blog is designed to be used by students and parents to keep up with what is happening in class. The blog will be updated daily with with hyperlinks to the notes/worksheets or textbook questions that were done during class. The notes that are posted are limited and may be lacking some information that is covered in class; however, they are an excellent resource for students that may be absent from a class.
On Wednesdays there will be a slightly longer weekly summary that will include more information on what topics are being done in class and any upcoming assignments and tests.
If you ever have any questions throughout the year please do not hesitate to email me at max.welz@gshare.blackgold.ca or call the school.
