Weekly Update #3

Math 7A and 7B
On Friday students will be writing their Integers Exam. This unit exam will cover all concepts from chapter 2 on integers. Students have been given many opportunities this week

Next week we will begin our Unit 3: Operations with Decimals. One thing that may be different in math for Grade 7 is that students will not be using calculators in class until after February. Our next unit is heavily focused on building numeracy skills. Numeracy is the ability to perform mathematical operations (adding, subtracting, dividing, multiplying, converting fractions/percents, decimals, etc.) without the use of technology (calculator). If students are experiencing any difficulties during the next unit they are encouraged to come in for extra help during lunch time or signing up for a numeracy flex block (flex blocks are every day 3).

I mentioned in last week's update that you will now notice an overall percentage grade on PowerSchool. Again, be aware that it is still very early on in the year and a student's grade may fluctuate greatly from assessment to assessment until we start to get a few assessments done. As well, in Grade 7 Math we cover a lot of different topics and units. The curriculum is quite vast and sometimes students will excel on a certain unit but struggle on another.

I would also like remind you again of my blog (https://welzblogeljhs.blogspot.com/). The blog contains a short update of each class and links to notes, assignments, and answer keys.

Math 8C
On Friday students will be writing their Integers Exam. This unit exam will cover all concepts from chapter 2 on integers. Students have been given many opportunities this week. One thing that is new to math in grade 8 is that students will be writing a numeracy portion during every unit exam. During these numeracy portions students will not be allowed to use their calculators. These numeracy questions are aligned with the new numeracy section of the PAT exam in grade 9.

Next week we are beginning Unit 3: Fractions.
