Weekly Update #8

Math 7A and 7B
Students completed an assignment on divisibility rules that was due on Tuesday. If the assignment was not handed in by a student you will see a "missing" and "late" symbol on PowerSchool. I mentioned this is an earlier weekend update but Ii is important that students ensure that they hand in assessments in a timely manner. It is important in Junior High that students start to take ownership of their own learning. If students do not take the opportunity to complete an assessment, they may receive a zero. As well, students may only work to complete tasks in the current reporting period. Therefore, once report cards are issued, marks are locked and zeros will be reluctantly awarded (if you see a grade of zero on PowerSchool students are still allowed to complete this assessment as long as it falls in the same reporting period). Reporting Periods:Term One: Sept 4 - Dec 2; Term Two: Dec 3 - March 31; Term Three: April 1 - June 2.

We have started Unit 3B: Fractions, Decimals, and Percents which will take us roughly into the middle of December.

If you ever have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me.

Math 8C
Students wrote their Unit Exam on Fractions yesterday and today. We are beginning a unit on Square Roots and Pythagorean Theorem on Friday.

If students are ever experiencing any difficulties I am always available for extra help from 12:25 - 12:42. And if students are ever unsatisfied with any of their grades they are welcome to come see me for remedial work during the lunch hour to improve their grades.

And as always, if you ever have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me

Weekly Update #7

Math 7A and 7B
We wrote the Unit 3A Unit Test yesterday and concluded our unit with decimals. We are now currently working on a short unit on Divisibility Rules. There will be an assignment that students will start on Friday and be due for marks on Tuesday.

Next week we will start our next unit on Fractions, Decimals, and Percents. I just wanted to remind you that I am always available during lunch time from 12:25 - 12:42 for extra math help. I just ask students bring in questions or work that they are struggling with to go over.

Math 8C
The Unit Test for Operations with Fractions has been moved back to next Tuesday (October 30th). This is conceptually one of the more complex units that we cover in Grade 8 Math. If students are experiencing any difficulties they are strongly encouraged to come in for extra help at lunch from 12:25 - 12:42.

Today we practiced for the numeracy portion of the exam and on Friday students will be completing a practice unit test.

Weekly Update #6

Math 7A and 7B
Students are finishing up Unit 3A: Operations with Decimals - the unit test is scheduled for Tuesday October 23rd. Next week we will be starting a short unit on Divisibility Rules.

I oftentimes receive the question from students and parents about homework. Parents often ask why nothing is being done at home. Every teacher will have a different homework policy. My policy is that I give ample amount of class time to complete assigned work; anything that is not completed in class should be done on student's time. I put should in italics because there are always things that come up in students' lives and sometimes they will not be able to complete it for the next day. One thing that should be considered in Jr. High is that regular study becomes more and more important. Completing daily assigned work and reviewing what was done each class for 5-10 minutes every night is regular study. So any work that is not completed in class is the student's responsibility to complete in a reasonable time. Preparing for quizzes and exams becomes more important as students progress through school. If students are ever struggling with any concept they are always welcome to come in for extra help during during from 12:25 - 12:42 - I just ask that they bring the questions/work that they are struggling with.

Weekly Update #5

Math 7A and 7B
Students are currently working on Unit 3A: Operations with Decimals. This unit is primarily a review of numeracy skills and a lot of basic elementary math concepts. Students have a quiz tomorrow that covers their addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division skills. Next week we are working on  order of operations which is the last topic of this unit. Students should expect a Unit Exam in about two weeks.

Weekly Update #4

Math 7A and 7B
Students' Unit Exam for Integers has been graded and reported on PowerSchool. We have begun Unit 3A: Operations with Decimals. I mentioned this in last week's update but one thing that may be different in math for Grade 7 is that students will not be using calculators in class until after February. Unit 3A is heavily focused on building numeracy skills. Numeracy is the ability to perform mathematical operations (adding, subtracting, dividing, multiplying, converting fractions/percents, decimals, etc.) without the use of technology (calculator). If students are experiencing any difficulties during the next unit they are encouraged to come in for extra help during lunch time or sign up for a numeracy flex block (flex blocks are every day 3).

Students should expect a quiz sometime near the end of next week that will cover operations with decimals (Thursday or Friday). And they should also expect an assignment in the coming weeks.

Otherwise, students are strongly encouraged to complete daily assigned work - my blog (https://welzblogeljhs.blogspot.com/) contains what is assigned each day. Typically enough class time is given for students to complete their assigned work; however, if students do not complete their work it should be done for homework. Math is a skill and in order to succeed students need consistent and constant practice.
