Weekly Update #9

Math 7A and 7B
Students are currently working on Unit 3B: Fractions, Decimals, and Percents. So far we have learnt how to convert between decimals and fractions; as well, we covered lowest terms fractions and converting between improper and mixed fractions.

It is important that students are completing regularly assigned work as this is a unit that requires a lot of practice. Assigned work is updated daily to my blog (https://welzblogeljhs.blogspot.com/). Students will be completing an assignment tomorrow and Friday and there will be a quiz near the end of next week.

Math 8C
The Unit Test for Fractions has been marked and reported in PowerSchool. For students that did poorly on this assessment there is a extra credit assignment that is available to improve students' grades. For students that achieved 70% or greater they can only get a maximum of 5% added to their overall grade (I will mark the assignment and take it as a percent of 5 - so if they get 80% on the assignment they get 4% added to their grade). And for students that got below 70% they can get a maximum of 10%. In the general scheme of things an extra 5% or even 10% on an assessment does not really change the overall grade. This assignment is to be done by students on their own time and hand it in as soon as possible.

This assignment only applies to the Unit Test and not the Numeracy Portion. For the Numeracy portion I will be exempting student's two lowest grades throughout the year (there will be 7 or 8 in total). The numeracy portion aligns with the PAT in grade 9 and we are trying to prepare students for this. The numeracy portion is 4-6 questions where students are not allowed to use calculators.

If you have any questions regarding your student's assessment please do not hesitate to contact me.

We have started our unit on Square Roots and Pythagorean theorem, which will take us into December.
