Math 7A and 7B
Students are continuing to work on Unit 3B: Fractions, Decimals, and Percents. Students wrote a quiz last Thursday that has been returned and graded. We are now working on percents and percentages of questions. These percentages of questions including calculating GST on items and calculating sales prices.
Students should expect the unit test for Unit 3B in two weeks (around December 11 or 12). This is a large unit that includes a variety of important concepts. If students are experiencing any difficulties they are always welcome to come in for help during lunch hour every day from 12:25 to 12:42.

Students are continuing to work on Unit 1: Square Roots and Pythagorean Theorem. Students wrote a quiz on Tuesday that has been recorded but not returned to students yet. We are now working on the second half of Unit 1 which includes Pythagorean Theorem.
Students should expect a unit test for Unit 1 in about 2 weeks (around December 13 or 14). If students are experiencing any difficulties they are always welcome to come in for help during lunch hour every day from 12:25 to 12:42.

Weekly Update #11
Math 7A and 7B
We are currently working on Unit 3A: Fractions, Decimals, and Percents. Students are writing a test tomorrow that covers Fractions and Decimals. This is sections 3.1 and 3.2 from the textbook. We completed a practice quiz yesterday and are going over it today in order to prepare for the quiz. We will then move onto working with Percents. This Unit 3A should take us up until Christmas vacation to complete.
It is important in Junior High that students start to take ownership of their own learning. If students do not take the opportunity to complete an assessment, they may receive a zero. As well, students may only work to complete tasks in the current reporting period. Therefore, once report cards are issued, marks are locked and zeros will be reluctantly awarded (if you see a grade of zero on PowerSchool students are still allowed to complete this assessment as long as it falls in the same reporting period). Reporting Periods: Term One: Sept 4 - Dec 2; Term Two: Dec 3 - March 31; Term Three: April 1 - June 2. If students have a grade of zero in any assessment these are due on Tuesday November 27th, otherwise the grade of zero cannot be changed.

We are currently working on Unit 1: Square Roots and the Pythagorean Theorem. Students will be writing a quiz on Tuesday November 27th. This will cover sections 1.1 to 1.4 from the textbook. The quiz covers primarily square roots and square numbers. After the quiz we will start on Pythagorean Theorem. This Unit 1 should take us up until Christmas Vacation to complete.

Weekly Update #10
Math 7A and 7B
Students are currently working through Unit 3B: Fractions, Decimals, and Percents. There will be a mid-unit quiz next Wednesday or Thursday. This quiz will cover converting fractions to decimals, converting decimals to fractions, converting improper/proper fractions, and comparing/ordering fractions.
This unit requires a lot of practice from students and it is very important students are completing regularly assigned work. My blog (https://welzblogeljhs.blogspot.com/) contains daily updates of what is done in each class. You can subscribe to email updates by entering your email into the box on the top of the page.

Weekly Update #9
Math 7A and 7B
Students are currently working on Unit 3B: Fractions, Decimals, and Percents. So far we have learnt how to convert between decimals and fractions; as well, we covered lowest terms fractions and converting between improper and mixed fractions.
It is important that students are completing regularly assigned work as this is a unit that requires a lot of practice. Assigned work is updated daily to my blog (https://welzblogeljhs.blogspot.com/). Students will be completing an assignment tomorrow and Friday and there will be a quiz near the end of next week.
Math 8C
The Unit Test for Fractions has been marked and reported in PowerSchool. For students that did poorly on this assessment there is a extra credit assignment that is available to improve students' grades. For students that achieved 70% or greater they can only get a maximum of 5% added to their overall grade (I will mark the assignment and take it as a percent of 5 - so if they get 80% on the assignment they get 4% added to their grade). And for students that got below 70% they can get a maximum of 10%. In the general scheme of things an extra 5% or even 10% on an assessment does not really change the overall grade. This assignment is to be done by students on their own time and hand it in as soon as possible.

This assignment only applies to the Unit Test and not the Numeracy Portion. For the Numeracy portion I will be exempting student's two lowest grades throughout the year (there will be 7 or 8 in total). The numeracy portion aligns with the PAT in grade 9 and we are trying to prepare students for this. The numeracy portion is 4-6 questions where students are not allowed to use calculators.
If you have any questions regarding your student's assessment please do not hesitate to contact me.
We have started our unit on Square Roots and Pythagorean theorem, which will take us into December.
